Approximate Committee Size: Coming Soon
The prevention of the colonization of outer space is imperative to global stability as any one nation claiming territory on places such as the Moon would cause global riot. Some countries are divided, saying that space is the next place to enact sovereignty, while others say that space deserves to be a free space for humanities exploration. The current foundational document for this type of issue is the Outer Space Treaty, however since its start in 1963, many countries worry that it is outdated and does not encompass all the possibilities of space colonization today. Delegates will have to explore this issue from many different perspectives and lenses as countries advocate for a more expansive treaty.
Delegates must ensure the long-term sustainability of outer space activities which could follow a multi-faceted approach, from a combination of international and widely-followed guidelines, to industry best practices and the possibility of commercialization in outer space. Key and specific areas would involve the voluntary international guidelines developed by the committee, however there is a push from citizens to have official rules and regulations on paper to solidify the long-term sustainability of outer space activities.
