Harry Potter

Committee Topics

Topic 1: Regulating the Use and Trade of Dark Magic

Topic 2: Regulating Magical Exposure to the Muggle World

Topic 2: Regulating Magical Exposure to the Muggle World

Dark magic has been a threat to the stability of the wizarding world for a long duration which encompasses many different events such as the rise of Lord Voldemort to the underground market of cursed objects and outlawed spells. Artifacts like Horcruxes and other cursed items have been smuggled countless times across borders and they often fall into the hands of wizards who intend to do evil with them. With the black market economy only growing, magicians are becoming skeptical whether the current Ministry with its international laws or sufficient. This issue requires delegates to find a delicate balance between controlling dark magic or completely banning it as the Wizarding World risks another wave of chaos and instability driven by the misuse of the dark magic.

Topic 2: Regulating Magical Exposure to the Muggle World

Topic 2: Regulating Magical Exposure to the Muggle World

Topic 2: Regulating Magical Exposure to the Muggle World

The Statute of Secrecy has governed the relations between the wizarding and non-magical worlds since 1692, ensuring that the magic remains hidden from Muggles to prevent skeptics, fear, and persecution. However, in the light of recent events such as large-scale battles between factions have not adhered to the Statue of Secrecy and have been spilling into public spaces. Increasing Muggle technology such as cameras and smartphones have only added fuel to the flame and has raised doubts about whether magic should still be shrouded in total secrecy, and whether that is still practical/ethical. Magicians argue that Muggles have a right to know about the existence of magic, while others warn that any exposure could open up to violent battles and disrupt the balance that has been maintained for centuries across the two worlds. Delegates have to navigate a delicate situation as one wrong step could ignite a full-scale war across the two worlds, and without a unified stance, relations could slide into conflict.

Vihaan Sai Kandula

Vihaan Sai Kandula is an 8th grader at Moody. He is overjoyed to serve as the co-chair for Harry Potter. He started MUN last year in my 7th grade year. He joined just to have something that looks good on applications, but he came to love MUN. He learned how to speak, he gained confidence, and he learned how to participate in a debate. He attended MoodyMUN last year, and he knows his way around. Apart from MUN, he is the co-president of Science Club, and he does robotics outside of school. He hopes that he can give you the same experience he gained from MUN. He can’t wait to see all the different delegations participate in an amazing debate!
