Committee Topics

Topic 1 - Strengthening the Global Nuclear Nonproliferation Regime

Topic 2 - Addressing the Weaponization of Nuclear Power-Plants in Armed Conflict

Topic 2 - Addressing the Weaponization of Nuclear Power-Plants in Armed Conflict

The spread of nuclear weapons is a threat to every country in the world. More nations gaining these weapons could spark conflicts, increase tensions, enable terrorists or criminals to obtain nuclear materials, and even trigger arms races. The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) was created to prevent this, but enforcement and compliance remain serious challenges. The committee must decide how to balance both sides: stopping the spread of nuclear weapons while protecting peaceful uses like energy and medicine.

Topic 2 - Addressing the Weaponization of Nuclear Power-Plants in Armed Conflict

The use of nuclear power plants as targets or tools in war threatens global safety. Attacks or accidents could release radiation, endanger civilians, and destabilize entire regions. The IAEA may need authority to conduct emergency inspections in war zones, but this raises questions about sovereignty and enforcement. The committee must decide how countries can protect nuclear facilities while preventing their weaponization during conflict.
