The Berlin crisis marks the most intense part of the Cold War. This was when the tension between the Soviet Union and the United States was at its peak. The altercation between the two superpowers happened in the divided capital of Germany, with the root of the problem being the erection of the Berlin Wall. With the added problem of the exodus out of Eastern Germany, sparks are sure to fly.
The Cuban Missile Crisis is the closest humanity has ever been to destroying itself. It marked a dangerous time, in which two world superpowers reached an all-time point of tension. The root of the crisis was found in the ongoing nuclear arms race. The US and the Soviet Union exercised nuclear fear tactics that only brought further irreversible tension. After the United States stationed nuclear-capable ICBMs in Italy and Turkey.

Abeer Shah is a 7th grader in the IB Program at Moody Middle School, and he is
honored to serve as your chair for JCC Cold War US. He began Model UN in 6th grade, where
he found a passion in the world of diplomacy, and has won a total of seven awards, including
three best delegate awards at conferences such as GSMUN and GODMUN. Additionally, Abeer
is an avid member of his school’s debate team and has won various awards. To give back to his
community, Abeer works to make public speaking and debate accessible to all, serving as the
Vice President of Outreach for the James River Academy of Diplomacy. Outside of school, he
picked up the hobby of music and plays the piano, drums, guitar, and even sings. He looks
forward to meeting all the delegates in the spring and creating an engaging, high-energy
committee experience.

Rylan D’Souza is a 7th grader at Moody Middle School, and he is thrilled to be serving as your chair for JCC Cold War US. This is his second year participating in Model UN, and he is very passionate about public speaking. Rylan has won awards in many conferences, such as GSMUN & WMUN, and has developed a strong foundation for his pursuit of extracurricular activities. Apart from academics, he plays soccer for Richmond United ECNL and has qualified for National Tournaments in California, Washington, and Kansas. He has also been recognized on a national level, being selected for US Youth Soccer Identification Trials. Rylan is also a co-founder of Tree of Life Stories, Richmond’s first magazine by kids for kids, where he has published many articles and participated in fundraising events. He looks forward to meeting all the delegates at MMSMUN XIV and can’t wait for an enticing & memorable conference.
