Rebels across the Red Sea Waterway, particularly Iran-backed Houthi forces, have been launching attacks on cargo ships, oil tankers, and other vessels. Over 50 Israel-affiliated ships have been destroyed, resulting in an estimated $1 trillion in losses. These attacks are also causing major delays in humanitarian aid shipments for the war in Israel and Gaza. The environmental damage is becoming worse, as hazardous substances are spilling into the Red Sea, severely harming its coral reefs and marine ecosystems. On top of an environmental disaster, a major trade route is being blocked, which has inevitably led to the delay of consumer goods around the world.
The Amazon Rainforest, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth, is home to thousands of unique plant and animal species. However, it is now under severe threat from deforestation, environmental degradation, and land conversion for agriculture and development. The destruction of this vital ecosystem has pushed the rainforest to a critical point, which would lead to one of the worst ecosystem collapses in human history. Without immediate help from surrounding nations and the world, the Amazon could lose its ability to support the diverse life forms it currently shelters, causing irreparable harm to both the region and the global climate.
Cindy Long is a 7th grader at Moody Middle School, and she is incredibly honored to be serving as one of your chairs for the UNEP committee this year. Cindy has been actively participating in Model UN since 6th grade, winning Best Delegate at MMSMUN XII. Outside of MUN, she enjoys dancing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Model UN has provided her with opportunities to enhance research, public speaking, and negotiation skills, which are valuable in both the classroom and the real world. She intends for this conference to provide you with the same engaging experience that she has enjoyed throughout her conferences. She hopes to see you at MMSMUN XIII!
